Trying out this website thing

I’ve had this idea of setting up a personal website for a while now, for a few reasons:

It’s probably a good idea to have one to point recruiters to, as well as a general “hey look I can do web dev” demonstration.

I’ve always liked looking through technical blogs like the one run by Fabien Sanglard or the essays on older game console hardware by Rodrigo Copetti, and I wanted to be able to make posts in the same vein about things I found interesting.

I’ve been getting into self-hosting and building a homelab over the last year or so, and hosting a website seems like an obvious use for the skills I’ve learned doing that (ironically, this particular website is hosted on a VPS and not my own hardware, but the skills still apply)

Currently, the site is built with Astro and served by Caddy since I liked the idea of a very lightweight static website, but still wanted the option to enable more server-side functionality if needed.

This first draft of the site is fairly minimally customized from the default Astro blog template, but I already have some ideas of changes to make (dark mode!) that should keep me busy.

Look forward to more posts on whatever I’m currently interested in!
